Whether you're applying for a job or not, it's always handy to have an elevator pitch in your "back pocket. After all, you never know who you might run into in the elevator! That's why we provide the do's & don'ts to create your perfect elevator pitch.
Do's for the perfect elevator pitch:
- Try to empathize with the target audience beforehand. In spontaneous meetings you will have to do this during the interview, but if you know in advance that you can do a short presentation, make sure you know who is sitting across from you and adjust your pitch accordingly.
- When you pitch about yourself, tell at least who you are, what you can do, what your added value is and what your ambition is.
- Make sure your pitch is short and powerful. Not only because you need to remember your pitch but also because you need to keep your interlocutor's attention.
- Tell with enthusiasm and adjust your body language. Make sure you make eye contact, stand up straight and tell your story with passion.

Don'ts for the perfect elevator pitch:
- Don't go memorizing a presentation. The person to whom you are telling your story will notice immediately. You will not come across as authentic and risk losing attention.
- Avoid a large amount of numbers. Too many numbers cause deafness, this causes the listener to lose interest and eventually stop listening.
- Do not assume a fixed pattern. This can blind you to the things you "need" to tell yourself which may cause you to go into parts that don't interest the other person.
- Don't use too much jargon and difficult terms. You never know who all you are facing. If you start using technical terms in your presentation, not everyone may understand what you mean. As a result, you may lose attention and not reach your desired goal.
