Dealing with conflict in the workplace, this is how you do it!

Blog

Do you ever have a conflict with a colleague? On the one hand, you have the desire to push through your (own) goals and get the job done. On the other hand, you have the desire to keep the relationship good and to keep the process running smoothly. So what should you do?

It is important to know how to deal with such a conflict in a constructive way. Fortunately, there are steps you can take as an employee to effectively resolve a conflict. We give you 6 tips to help you deal with conflict in the workplace.

1. Take a breath and calm your emotions

Conflict can evoke emotions such as anger, frustration or sadness. It is important to take a breath before reacting. Try to control your emotions and calm yourself down. This will help you think clearly and respond rationally rather than acting impulsively.

2. Actively listen to the other person

Effective communication is essential in conflict resolution. Actively listen to the other person without interrupting. Try to understand their perspective and be open-minded. Showing empathy and understanding can lay the foundation for constructive dialogue.

3. Communicate in a respectful manner

Keep communication respectful, even if you disagree with the other person. Besides obviously avoiding swear words, insults or personal attacks, it is also good to pay attention to your use of voice. Enter the conversation in a calm tone, focus on the facts and discuss specific issues rather than the person themselves. Use "I" statements to express your feelings and needs without blaming the other person.

4. Look for compromises

Try to work with the other person to find a good solution. Identify overlapping interests and look for possible compromises. The goal is to find a solution that both parties can be satisfied with. Be willing to negotiate and be flexible in your positions.

5. Seek support if needed

If the conflict seems difficult to resolve or if you get stuck, seek support if necessary. Discuss the situation with a confidant, a colleague or a supervisor who can help you find a solution.
