How digital is the Netherlands?

Recent research on the digital economy in the Netherlands, shows that as much as 94% of the Dutch population uses the Internet. And over 48% of all information is shared through digital means (source: DESI 2019). It is therefore not surprising that more and more organizations are responding to developing digital skills in their employees. In this article, we list the most important figures surrounding digital developments in the Netherlands.
Digital impact at organizations
Beyond the increase in private use, many companies require computers and the Internet to perform their daily activities. For example, 78% of employed personnel within large organizations use computers and 74% of employees need the Internet to perform their jobs (source: cbs.co.uk).
The most commonly used devices in the Netherlands
The phone and television are the most used devices in the Netherlands (source: Hootsuite 2018). 97% use a cell phone, 95% use a television, 87% use a laptop or computer and 61% use a tablet. In doing so, we spend an average of 4 hours and 50 minutes per day on the Internet. We listen to music an average of 39 minutes a day, spend about 80 minutes a day on social media and watch just under 3 hours of television a day.

Most used social platforms
When Dutch people use social platforms, WhatsApp, Youtube and Facebook are in the top 3. This is followed by Messenger, Instagram, Linkedin, Twitter, Pinterest, Snapchat, Google+, Skype and Tumblr.
Digital skills
Finally, basic ICT skills are in relatively good shape. Previous central government research shows that only 16% have low skills, 32% know basic skills and 48% have more than basic skills. And those skills are still rising.
