Adaptive learning is key to highest learning efficiency

Do you want to learn only what is relevant to you? That's roughly what adaptive learning is all about. Within adaptive training, you choose your learning path, your time, and leave out what's not interesting to you. And that's what we love at SkillsTown.

The world of adaptive learning

In case you are not yet familiar with the world of adaptive learning, we are happy to take you by the hand. Imagine that, based on the knowledge you already have, a personal learning path is waiting for you, in our case in the form of an online training. You take a quiz beforehand and with the results you can already give us a good idea of your current knowledge.

This results in a learning path that helps you see what you still need to learn and what you can basically skip because you already know enough about it. You have to learn less theory and practice, so we require less of your time. Karin Bremer, product manager at SkillsTown, explains: "Adaptive training is super efficient because that way we don't give you the idea that we're wasting your time with things you already know anyway.

The benefits of adaptive learning

That it is time-efficient is not the only advantage of adaptive learning. The learning efficiency is significantly higher with this form of learning. This also applies, incidentally, to the completion rate of a training course within the online learning platform Inspire. In the feedback we see that participants find learning in this way more fun because of the added form of interaction. Of course, that sounds like music to our ears.

Karin says: 'Especially in subjects where you need to keep your knowledge up-to-date, for example as a FAFS officer, adaptive learning is a godsend. Based on various themes you can test throughout the year to what extent the FAFS officer in question still needs to refresh his knowledge and what he is sure of. That bit of insight and self-awareness does our average participant good. Indeed, it gives them self-confidence.

Fear of missing out

Yet there is a real challenge attached. 'Nowadays we are familiar with the term FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) mainly because of social media, but in adaptive learning it also plays a big role for some," she says.

A participant may find it exciting to skip theory. Because, what if you don't know it anyway? What if you just guessed right during the adaptive test? Very understandable, but we have thought of that too. You always get the chance to read, learn, practice and practice what you skipped. FOMO doesn't sit well with everyone and we take that very seriously," Karin emphasizes.

Of course, as SkillsTown, we can only pass along that we think carefully about what we make adaptive and what we don't, so you will never miss crucial information. Promise!
