5 tips to increase your digital security

Blog

Are you concerned enough with your digital security? After all, some of the responsibility for securing company information lies with you as an employee. Especially now while working from home, as research shows that the number of data breaches have risen significantly during the home working period.

One reason for this is that security at the employee's home may not be as good as it is at work. This can have personal consequences, but also for the organization.

To prevent sensitive data from being out in the streets, you need to know the right steps to take. In this article you will read 5 tips to ensure safe (home) working conditions and better digital security.

Tip 1: Keep an eye on software updates

The older your software is, the more likely it is to be cracked. Therefore, run updates to all your software. This way you prevent viruses from exploiting vulnerabilities in old versions of programs. It helps to set up automatic updates for this purpose.

Tip 2: Report suspicious emails

Phishing is common within companies. Someone pretends to be your manager, for example. This is how criminals try to steal your personal information or install malware on your computer. Do not just click on attachments or links in emails and learn to recognize fake emails. Also let your supervisor know that you have received a suspicious e-mail, so he/she can warn the rest of the organization.

Tip 3: Provide an antivirus scanner and firewall

These are security measures you need to take to safely use your devices connected to the Internet. Why do you need both? A firewall is an external form of security and filters your network traffic so that viruses don't get in. Whereas an antivirus software is an internal security measure and detects and disables viruses that are already in your computer. So both are important to have when it comes to digital security. Online you can find several free options.

Tip 4: Secure your devices and accounts properly

This is probably the most frequently mentioned tip, when it comes to safe Internet browsing. But there's a reason for that. You see, a lot of digital attacks focus on passwords. Through phishing emails, stealing passwords is very easy. So make sure you don't use the same password for everything. Chances are you won't be able to remember all your passwords this way. Therefore, get an app or secure file where you store your passwords.

Tip 5: Take care when using open wifi

Do you ever change your workplace and sit in a library or cafe, for example? Then don't use the open wifi. This is not secure. This is because a wifi network that is not secure allows others within your network to upload files or software. Important concerns:

  • Don't set your device settings to automatically connect.
  • Do not telebank via open wifi.
  • Use your data bundle (3G or 4G connection). This is a lot safer.
