3 tips to discover your talent

Blog

You've probably heard or read it before: people who work from their talents are happier and more productive. But what if you don't really know what your talents are? Should you then settle for a job that doesn't energize you? Of course not! Because everyone has one or more talents, you just need to take the time to get clear on what they are. With these three tips you can make a start.

Tip #1: Talents are not always something great or unique

Many people think that a talent is something very special, something only you can do. For example, these people see sports at a high level as a talent, or being able to paint lifelike. If this also applies to you, you may think that you yourself have no talent. But everyday work can also be a talent. Perhaps you are very good at organizing or you make conversation with everyone very easily. Think about the work you do in a day and decide which three things you think you do best. Do you find this difficult? Then ask colleagues what they think are your strengths.

Tip #2: Your talent is often something that comes easily to you

You may think that a talent is something that costs you a lot of time or something you spend a lot of time doing every day. In some cases this is true, but often the things you are good at actually cost you the least amount of time. Compare yourself to colleagues: what takes other people a lot of time that you can get done in no time? For example, do you write a nice article within two hours, where someone else could spend days? Or do you solve technical problems super fast? Again, write down for yourself three things that come easily to you.

Tip 3: Think about what you enjoy doing the most

For most people, the things you are good at are also the things you enjoy doing most. So clarify for yourself which activities make you really happy. This can be work, but also look at what you do in your free time. Again, write down three things that make you happy when you are doing them, or that you can't stop thinking about.

Bonus tip: What did you "forget"?

You have now made a nice list of things that you are good at and that you like. But no doubt you still have something in the back of your mind. Something you think, "Surely people don't see that as a talent?" or "But I could never make that my job, could I?" So ask yourself one last question: What didn't you write down, but did you think of? Now your list of talents is really complete!
